very good workk in view of very wet weather
The gap around the windows on the outside was much bigger in some cases than the industry standard 5mm. This was filled with foam and covered with trim. On the inside there was very little room between the tiling in the reveal and the window beading making the bathroom and kitchen look tight and trim had also been used all the way round instead of a nice line of silicone.
When I complained to the owner he sent the installer back who was clearly irritated and defensive. He insisted the job couldn’t have been done any better. Unfortunately the owner couldn’t find time to visit himself when I was at home but he told me that he had looked around the outside when I was out and that he thought the job was “neat”. I noticed he didn’t say “good”. When you cover all the imperfections with trim you can make any job look “neat”. Also, I don’t know how anyone can make a proper assessment without seeing the inside.
We tried very hard to ensure that every installation is to a very high standard. At no time did we treat the customer with disrespect. The industry standard is to reduce the frame size by 10mm not 5mm from the size of the opening, which will of course allow for expansion and contraction. We had to add an extra 2-3mm per side across the width due to the beading on the inside around the tiles. If we had done as the customer suggested this would have increased the frame width by an additional 15mm per side which would have been too bulky and also would have reduced the size of any window openings. Foam is used as a cavity filler to help prevent the spread of fire, it is also an excellent insulator and sealant. It is very widely used in the industry. We also use frame fixings to secure the window to the brickwork. Our window surveyor visited the customer twice following installation and he patiently explained why the windows have been fitted in this particular way. The customer accepted the explanation and shook hands with the surveyor stating he was happy with the reasoning and clarification.
