I discovered HIG purely by accident rather than design, after spending many hours on the PC searching for a reputable builder to carry out a large kitchen/diner renovation project. When I contacted HIG, I dealt with Mr Harvey Ellingham. He explained to me the purpose of the HIG scheme and how it was set up to protect the rights of both the customer and the builder, by entering into a contract that would guarantee the work to be carried out. In essence the scheme was devised to weed out 'cowboy builders and contractors' who have been the scourge of the UK and left many families in ruins as a result of shoddy workmanship, poor standards and a complete disregard for the rights of the consumer. I was completely sold with HIG and wondered why such a scheme had never existed before. A short time after speaking with Mr Ellingham, I was directed to speak with a local builder who had signed up to the scheme and whose firm was supported by Trading Standards. The builder was subsequently employed. Over a four week period he carried out my kitchen renovation to an incredibly high standard. The finished product went way beyond the expectations of my wife and I because the builder not only worked to his own high standards, he also made suggestions to our initial design plans. This resulted in a more modern, practical and eye-catching kitchen/diner. We really couldn't be happier! Throughout all this was the security and safety net of the HIG scheme that both the builder and I had signed up to. Firstly,I knew that I had employed a builder who was subject to the stringent tests required by HIG and secondly, the release of budget funds would only be released to the builder if I was satisfied with the progress/standard of the work being carried out. There were no such issues and at each stage when funds were requested, I was happy to do so using Transpact, the company used as a vehicle for the transfer of funds. All in all, HIG is an absolute must for customers seeking to employ builders to carry out major works/renovation to their properties. It is also equally beneficial to the builders who subscribe to HIG, because it also safeguards their reputation and ability to trade competitively and successfully. It was an absolute pleasure to deal with Mr Ellingham and if there are any more major building projects to be carried out on my property, he will be the first person I contact! (Reviewed July 2016)
